a competition entry to design a memorial in the place of the villa that was used by the commander of Sachsenburg concentration camp.
concept:
The prisoners of the concentration camp were taken to the central courtyard at the beginning of the day. The prisoners had a view of the Commandant house where the Commandant lived with his family. The commandant had a view from his house of the prisoners lined up on the courtyard.
In the years after the war, this visual connection was blocked through the building of a further garage between the Commandant’s house and the square.
Our competition entry made two suggestions.
1. The installation of a Billboard depicting the image of the Commandant’s house so that visitors could understand the significance of this visual connection between the Commandants house and the square where the prisoners stood.
2. The competition initiators stated that it was their intention to demolish the Commandants house to the level of the plinth and the that the basement of the house was to be filled in.
Our proposal was to replace the Commandants house with a glass house reflecting the form and volume of the original.
This glass house would be be used to grow plants, fruit and vegetables and as a meeting, learn and activity space for the young.
